Self-indulgence

Self-indulgence

Adult children who were deprived in childhood not only continue to
deprive themselves the way their parents did, but they also often go to
the other extreme and become overly self-indulgent. In fact, the flip
side of deprivation is indulgence. This is why so many neglected and
emotionally abused children grow up to become adults who are
overindulgent.

One of the primary problems adults who were overprotected
or emotionally smothered tend to experience is difficulty separating
and individuating from their parents. The term separation refers to
the ability to have a clear psychic representation (an internal image
and understanding) of the self as different from everyone else, especially the mother.
