Do you want to be a sensitive, caring person? Be careful not to confuse love with feeling sorry for people. People who feel sorry for themselves are being overcome by helplessness. Do not accept that debilitating emotional contagion.
When you feel sorry for them, you have been captured by their feelings of helplessness. You will be more helpful to them if you can bring them hope, encouragement, and self-empowerment.
Love, at times, may make us sad and disappointed because it contrasts so sharply with the emotional distress and the dismal conditions we see all around us. But love also fuels a powerful desire to become more grateful for what we have and to be more useful to others who can benefit from us. Negative legacy emotions, and not love, will always burn us out.
