Emotional growth

Some of these social influences, from daycare to computer games and television, can be positive and encourage a young person to mature into an adult who lives by reason, ethics, and love, but too few elements in the child's broader  culture aim in this direction.

Despite this catalog of positive and negative cultural and societal influences, the quality of the home environment and the family's support or lack of support for the child's sense of worth remain pivotal in determining the direction and success of emotional growth. A solid, loving family with good values will help children to live positive lives in the face of negative pressures within their neighborhoods, their schools, and society.

Our negative legacy emotions are highly integrated into the anatomy and function of our brain. This occurs along with our more positive emotions and social experiences. Along with that, we are born with an unparalleled capacity for willfulness, aggression, and violence, which childhood can either ameliorate or exacerbate, depending on the quality of parenting and exposure to trauma.
