Neglected Infants

Neglect is by far the most common abuse reported to child-protection agencies, and most of these reports occur in the first year of life.

8 Neglected infants do not receive sufficient medical care. They go hungry or live in squalor. They are left alone for sustained periods. Often, their endless crying draws the attention of concerned neighbors. The frequency of child neglect suggests that our emotional reactions may have been shaped by such events in our first few years of life, leaving us with no memory of what happened and driving us with emotions that have no relationship to adult values or needs.

When living amid terror and humiliation, children often withdraw further and further into a private world as their only means of escape. Beginning at age three or four, a child may withdraw by escaping into pleasant fantasies, such as stepping into a movie or storybook or being with a seemingly caring celebrity.
